My Step by Step Journey

Images of Step by Step From 2010 to present day

In 2010 Leanne Grubb, a fundraiser from Step by Step, visited my referral group – BNI Guildford – to tell us about the Buy a Brick campaign they were running to fund a new building to house their clients.

Who are their clients? Homeless teens in Surrey (yes, Surrey…). Step by Step offers a place to re-start their lives with not only emergency accommodation, but offers counselling to address their situations and strategic planning to get them into work or further education. Learning to run a household, cook & clean, live with other people and compile a CV are just a few of the essential life skills that Step by Step share with these teens. I was impressed.

I had wanted to get involved in some sort of charity work, and these teens made me curious. I emailed Leanne and asked if a photography workshop was something Step by Step might be interested in. She excitedly explained that the clients had just designed a “Thank You” card and were in the process of seeing that design through to a finished product. I offered to run a photography workshop to illustrate the card and my relationship with the charity took off from there.

This was one of the 2 photos created by the clients to show what life was like being homeless. It was important that the teen was hiding from everyone because they felt homelessness embarrassing. They wanted the people in the background to be blurred as if getting on with their own lives.

The clients brainstormed the images, organised the shoots and we all pieced together the final product which now gets sent to everyone who makes a contribution and it is literally from the clients themselves.

A few weeks after Leanne’s first visit to BNI, she came back.. This time she was asking if anyone would be willing to jump out of a perfectly good plane in exchange for people handing over their money to make it happen. I’m not sure where the daredevil in me came from, but 3 months later found me somewhere in Oxford throwing on a jumpsuit and a funny hat, getting into a plane with about 8 other jumpers and their tandem masters, and being the last one out the door at 13,000 feet.

...of course I hired the photographer to shoot me as I fell!

IT WAS AWESOME – and I raised in excess of £800. Now when any kind of challenge stares me in the face these days I still think “…I jumped out of a XXXXing plane…”

Since then I’ve helped with photographs of the staff, Summer Sleepout fundraisers, and was pleased to see the new building in Crimea Road Aldershot come to life!

Step by Step is 20 years old now and this January they held a masked ball and auction to kick off the celebrations. I covered that event for them – it was a hoot! I am now embarking on another photographic project with the clients to create a library of images to keep their website and publicity refreshed. Then of course there is the small matter of a Royal visit…

On February 28th, 2013 the Countess of Wessex visited the new building for a tour, to chat to the clients and the staff and finally to unveil a memorial plaque. The excitement was tangible and I had the responsibility of capturing the event without tripping, sneezing on anyone, saying the wrong thing or getting forcibly removed by security through ignorance. Of course nothing like that happened!  Everything went smoothly and more importantly the clients and staff were thrilled. The photos have been used extensively in the local press and the event – and Step by Step – got some great PR exposure. All good news for the clients and their futures. More to come as the next photographic project gets underway in April!

It’s a great charity – and effective. If you would like to make a donation, I guarantee the money will positively improve a young person’s life.

My Expo at Guildford Means Business!!

MY FIRST EXHIBITION!!

My first venture into corporate exhibiting was on May 18th at Guildford Means Business, hosted by the Webster Partnership. I showcased my corporate work primarily, although I had a couple of albums on hand to show off the social photography too.

My strategy? Exhibit ME! It’s my name above the door so to speak, so I guess that’s my USP. My stand was a photo booth and in addition to meeting people and talking about my work I took head shots and photographed the exhibition itself. The flashes were going off continuously on the stand and around the exhibit – you can view the photos by clicking here.

So…you could say I was busy…UNDERSTATEMENT!!

I had two fantastic assistants (featured above) on the day, Holly Gordon of HG Coaching and Ade Oduyemi of Maximum Inheritance Specialists. What a compliment – they are my clients and volunteered to big me up!

I offered a prize draw of a corporate photo shoot which was won by Gordon Hewett of CMB Soft. The draw was made by Julie Jenkinson, who manned the stand for the Surrey Air Ambulance. Julie is a good friend and colleague, and was also promoting the SAA’s upcoming events.

All in all I had a great experience, and I hope it pays off because I might like to do it again…

Free AND Green Electricity??? You must be barking….

But no – the only bark came from a diligent and vocal German Shepherd at the home of Paul Williams (in blue) when I arrived to photograph him and Ben Way (in white) early in the morning of April 21.

These are the kind of jobs where I turn up not knowing what to expect then POW – I become involved in a small way with something incredible…

So who are they? Paul and Ben are the CEO and CTO respectively of Freetricity which was launched TODAY – accompanied by a fantastic offer to 1200 Surrey residents to go green for FREE! Anybody who is interested simply needs to visit www.freetricity.net to register and find out more.

At the time I was busy shooting and wasn’t sure if I was hearing correctly but these two engaging personalities have indeed made this happen. It is paid for by the UK Government’s Feed in Tariff Scheme (FiT).  Freetricity takes these FiT payments and the homeowner benefits from free electricity produced by the solar panels.

Paul Williams (CEO of Freetricity) is an entrepreneur and investor who lives in Surrey.  He has founded a number of companies including World Publications which he subsequently sold to the BBC.

Ben Way (CTO of Freetricity) is best known for his appearance on “Secret Millionaire”.  He started his first company aged just 15 and went on to become one of the first .com millionaires.  He won the title of New Business Millennium Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2000 and has developed numerous ventures since then, making him one of the most prolific entrepreneurs in the UK.

I was booked to photograph Paul and Ben by the award winning public relations agency PNPR who have been colleagues of mine for years. They were hired by Freetricity to manage the PR campaign.

KEEP OFF THE GREEN DSLR Workshops for Beginners

Update: I no longer offer these as events, but am happy to host a group or individual booking.

Enjoying a day out togging!
A happy Holly learning her way round a camera!

So many people come up to me and say – what camera is that?

How many megapixels?

I have a camera but it doesn’t take pictures as good as yours…(I have a Ken Hom wok but I’m no chef…)

So I ask what settings they shoot with. They’ll answer “The running man for fast stuff, the lady in the hat for people, the little flower for…” – you get my drift.

I show them my camera, highlight the absence of the hat-lady and tell them their DSLR can probably make lovely photographs too – but they themselves need to be capable of using it.

So I started these workshops in 2010 after a long stint of planning and re-planning…hunting out venues and pricing stuff up…working out how to make a profit from them etc etc etc…like any business idea really. It wasn’t until I actually took a break from work one day to go photographing – for fun with my now boyfriend – that I realised I was over thinking the idea.

Totally simplified its like this:

  1. We go somewhere nice
  2. I relay a bit of techie knowledge
  3. We do some exercises to demonstrate the techie stuff
  4. The clients use that knowledge to point the cameras at pretty things and make pictures.
  5. And I guide them all day of course, and we eat lunch.
  6. FUN
As a professional sometimes I forget about the fun bit of my job. The pressures of getting it right, working to time and budget sometimes overwhelms the personal satisfaction of creating an image. These workshops have been great for reminding me that photography is fun.
There’s always a LIGHTBULB moment with each client where they finally understand the relationship between stop and shutter speed and start to control their image making. It’s a bit nostalgic to see that understanding happening for the first time – looking at something and wanting to capture it – and KNOWING how to start!
If you want to come along one day, email me and I’ll tell you when the next one is.
